Sepsis is thus much more common in the USA than myocardial infarction, breast cancer, or colon cancer ( 6, 7). Despite a continual decline in mortality ( 4), more than 200 000 persons died of sepsis in the USA in 2007 ( 5). According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the annual incidence of sepsis in the USA rose by 7–8% per year over a period of 8 years, from 221/100 000 persons in 2000 to 377/100 000 persons in 2008 ( 3). Sepsis, the most severe manifestation of acute infection, can cause multi-organ failure and ends in death in 30–50% of cases ( 1, 2).
